A bittern wintered in the valley of the River Glaven at Bayfield in 2017/18 and often spent time hunting along the reedbed margins in full view. This study started off as a landscape watercolour depicting the poplars and marshy pools. However, as I was in the final stages of competing the work, I was told about the 'secretive Bittern' and couldn't resist adding it to the foreground.
